AN INVESTIGATION ON THE POSSIBILITY OF USING DIKES TO RECLAIM ARABLE LANDS FROM THE JEBEL AULIA RESERVOIR

Abstract


White Nile Irrigated Agricultural schemes are affected by the operation of Jebel Aulia dam; they depend on pumping water from J.A. reservoir via intake canals. The need for research on enhancing the performance of those schemes inspired this study. Utilizing Landsat imagery; the area of Jebel Aulia reservoir had been calculated for the full and empty reservoir conditions. Based on the comparison between the two conditions and considering the islands areas’, the recession areas which are potential for reclamation had been identified. Within the recession areas; several dikes had been proposed. Tentative cost had been estimated for each dike, from which unit rate per reclaimed feddan was calculated. Those projects are of multipurpose; such as the development of new potential irrigation areas, fisheries, recreation areas reduction in seepage and evaporation losses from J.A. reservoir in addition to availing sustainable pumping systems for the existing and future White Nile irrigation projects.
