Abstract
The Hafirs (water reservoirs)
played an important role in the different
political, economic, and religious aspects
of life in Sudan since the period of the
Meroitic Kingdom (350B.C.–350A.D.)
and the following periods, especially
Funj Kingdom era (1502-1821). After the
presentation of the Hafirs and their history
in Sudan, this paper details their vital
importance for the Kingdom of Fung;
their role in the administration of adjacent
communities, their strategic functions,
and their contribution to the agricultural
and pastoral prosperity which, in its turn,
led to the prosperity of the economy of
the Kingdom and its stability.
