Effect of Sowing Date and Seed Rate on Growth and Seed Yield of Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.)

The objective of this experiment was to determine the optimum
sowing date and seed rate of linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) as a new crop by studying their effect on plant growth and seed yield. It was carried out at Hudeiba Research Station (HRS) for the two seasons of 2011/12 and
2013/14. Treatments comprised seed rates (50, 60, 70kg/ha) and sowing dates (first of November, mid November, first of December and mid December) which were arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Seed rates were randomized in the main plots and so were sowing dates in the subplots.
The results showed that sowing date significantly (P≤0.05) affected plant
height, but there was no significant difference among seed rates. Both sowing date and seed rate had no significant effect on number of branches and number of leaves per plant. Number of days to 50% flowering was
significantly (P≤0.05) different among sowing dates but not among seed
rates. Number of flowers and number of capsules per plant were not
significantly affected by sowing date and seed rate. Both sowing date and
seed rate, however, significantly affected number of days to maturity. Seed
yield and 1000- seed weight were not significantly affected by seed rate but
were affected by sowing date. The first of November sowing date was the
optimum as it resulted in significantly higher seed yield than the others.
Albeit seed rate had no significant effect, the highest seed yield was obtained when the crop was sown on the first of November using seed rate at 60 kg per hectare.
