Abstract

This article presents a review of the field training methodologies of the Department of Archaeology, University
of Khartoum, through archaeological excavations at the site of Es-Sour. The article discusses, in a theoretical
and practical manner, the application of the course “Archaeological Techniques (Excavation) (2) Excavation –
Fieldwork” and the steps necessary to achieve the basic objectives of the course in the field. The article
includes a detailed account of the results of the excavations at the site of Es-Sour during the uaers from 2005
to 2009. During this period, students of the Department of Archaeology, University of Khartoum, and some
students and researchers from other universities and institutions in Sudan, participated annually in the
excavations, and their excavations contributed to identifying an important cultural development during the late
Neolithic period in central Sudan.
