Recent studies in Sudanese archaeology have been focused on addressing questions raised by previous research
projects and testing them through archaeological surveys in areas that were previously overlooked. This study
aimed to investigate the Abu Shanib region. The research was conducted to uncover the origins of human
settlement in the area, determine whether the current settlement is recent or rooted in the past, especially after
archaeological studies along the Blue Nile revealed evidence of prehistoric human activity.
This paper aims to provide insight into the Abu Shanib site through two main aspects: firstly, it presents the
geographical location of the site, and secondly, it examines the archaeological evidence of prehistoric human
activity at the site. This evidence was collected through archaeological surveys and test excavations carried out
by the researcher. By utilizing descriptive and analytical approaches, the researcher found that the site contains
archaeological remains dating back to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. These remains include pottery
fragments, stone tools, human skeletons, decorative tools, and environmental debris.
The archaeological artifacts discovered at the Abu Shanib site indicate a connection between the Al-Quz culture
to the south and the Khartoum culture to the north. The presence of locally made stone and decorative tools
further supports this connection. The study recommends immediate rescue efforts for the site, as it is currently
at risk of destruction due to the activities of the area's current residents.
