Abstract

This study dealt with some nicknames of pre-Islamic veterans’ poets with the aim of revealing the reasons for
nicknaming. The study followed descriptive analysis. The results showed that nicknaming of some poets comes
from verse of poetry he said, or others said about him and from phrase he said or something he did. Also, the
study finds that the nicknames are anciently famous among Arabs and some of them indicate the vilifying and
social criticism, but people still use them till now in different classes of the society.
