Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the representations of the subaltern, and the images in which he was shown in one of the contemporary novels is the novel (shawq Al-Darwish) by the Sudanese writer Hamour Ziada. Since cultural criticism is the most capable approach to revealing representations, building mental images about oneself and about the other, it was adopted as a methodological mechanism for reading in this study. The study has shown that the subaltern in this novel was represented in more than one image, showing in its entirety the unstable nature of his life, and the transformations that have befallen it according to cultural and social contexts. Although the follower was subjected to persecution and violence, he did not give up, but sought to overcome this situation by resorting to new means to speak through it, and to express his presence through it, which consisted in resisting persecution, confronting violence with violence at times, and with love at other times, as he took from these means a defensive strategy that freed him from his weakness and helplessness, restored his confidence in himself, revealed his humanity, and his ability to refuse.
