Abstract

The concept of tolerance acquired several meanings in the Qur'anic discourse and within its ethical system that embodied the sublimest forms of religious, intellectual and social tolerance. It was embodied in varied forms through the diversity of human consciousness forms in history. It also extended to include the political, social and religious aspects. Philosophy was one of the most important intellectual fields that worked on entrenching it in the human mind with its theoretical and applied dimensions. The study addressed the issue of tolerance between the Qur'anic discourse and modern and contemporary philosophy, and the importance of this concept in peaceful coexistence between peoples. The problem of the study stems from the need for a comprehensive comparative study of the concept of tolerance from an Islamic perspective compared to Western philosophical views. The objectives of the study include identifying the philosophical and Qur'anic roots of tolerance, comparing the two concepts, and clarifying the points of agreement and disagreement. The study used the descriptive analytical method and the comparative method. The study concluded that there are points of agreement between the two visions regarding respect for the freedom of others, but they differed in the way of dealing with the concept. The study also demonstrated the superiority of the Islamic perspective in establishing the concept of tolerance. The study came out with a number of recommendations, the most important of which are: developing plans to spread a culture of tolerance, correcting misconceptions about it, and preparing educational programs for young people to promote this culture
