Abstract

Semiotics holds a special position in modern criticism and intellectual thought. It is a highly specialized cognitive activity in terms of its origins, extensions, and analytical methods. It is a science that draws its principles and foundations from a wide range of knowledge fields such as linguistics, philosophy, logic, psychoanalysis, and anthropology. The importance of this study lies in the challenge of examining a modern poetry collection titled "Um Durman Tuhtadher" by Mohammed Al-Wathiq. The collection has posed problematic questions and sparked debates regarding its content, purpose, and multiple interpretations. We believe that semiotic reading is one of the most effective approaches to uncover hidden meanings and connotations behind the symbols and signs contained in the collection.

Semiotic interpretation processes are characterized by an ongoing dialectic that seeks the hidden secrets and profound connotations of poetic discourse in the subject of this study, namely the collection itself. It is as if the apparent words are merely a mask that can only be unveiled by those who possess the ability to contemplate and perceive. Hence, this study represents a serious attempt to reveal the contents of a contemporary poet's collection, who has its uniqueness in performance, and revolves around the theme of criticizing his city (Um Durman).
