This translation presents one of the most important early archaeological works in the Sudan that summarizes Anthony John Arkell's observations about the Paleolithic. This work was published by the Sudanese Antiquities Service in 1949 and reprinted in 1963 in an occasional paper entitled (The old stone age in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan). Arkell, as the first commissioner of antiquities and anthropology in the Sudan, had broad areas in most of throughout Sudan with little or no indications of where he could begin, but he had an incentive in the form of abundant records of the Paleolith ic in the regions neighboring Sudan. The record shown by this first publication, of Paleolithic Sudan as a whole, is impressive, especially as the result of work done in wartime during the period of interdiction. Arkell's publications are a pioneering model in archaeological research, and also an example of what can be achieved with enthusiasm and perseverance despite difficulties. For the first time a clear picture is given of the distribution of Lower Paleolithic sites along the two major present-day rivers, the Atbara and the Main Nile, extending up to the White Nile a little south of the Jebel Awliya Dam. The publication also includes references to his excavations at Khartoum and Shaheinab, to which Arkell made noteworthy and timely contributions. The current publication of Paleolithic studies in Sudan includes field observations of the Khor Abu Anja site, as well as references from other sites throughout Sudan. Many notes have been added in the margin, either by me or by Dr. Ahmed Hamid Nassr, who has published several publications on the Paleolithic period in Sudan
