Abstract

The excavations of the College of Tourism and Archaeology at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, revealed a kaged (paper) manuscript in Season XIII (1436/1437 AH.) in area (1), unit (14), square (D17), Region One, Qarh (Almabiat). It was the first manuscript discovered in the excavation seasons at the location, which began in 1425 AH. This manuscript was discovered by luck when examining the archaeological remains stored for study, including fabrics, wood, and bone remains. Observation showed that the manuscript was made of very fragile and weak kaged paper with distortions, dark spots, fungal infections, and salt calcifications, and a thick dust layer on the surface. The present paper tackles the scientific method of diagnosing and determining the causes of deterioration products using examination methods. It also includes the stages of restoration and conservation and analysis of the text. It concludes with results and recommendations.
