Abstract

This translation presents a section from Fred Wendorf's book (The Prehistory of Nubia), edited by him and published in Dallas, Texas: Southern Methodist University Press, 1968. Published in two volumes, with a separate geological atlas, it includes numerous illustrations, photographs, figures, tables, and maps. Of the more than 40 expeditions involved in the recent archaeological rescue campaign in Nubia, only two were specifically and primarily concerned with the study of prehistory. This is partly due to the abundance and remarkable nature of some recent remains, but it also reflects the fact that many prehistorians had adopted the view that Egypt and Sudan were outside the mainstream of development during most of the Paleolithic period, and that little of significance would be found in the reservoir region. Egypt and Nubia were thought to be culturally conservative and virtually unchanged from the Middle Paleolithic until just before the beginning of the Neolithic period. The error of this assumption is made clear by this summary, translated from Volume II, which is a key seminal report in the study of Nubian prehistory. Edited by Fred Wendorf, (The Prehistory of Nubia) is the flagship work of the Combined Prehistoric Expedition, which worked extensively in both Egypt and Sudan between 1962 and 1966. It was perhaps the largest coordinated prehistoric survey
and excavation program ever undertaken; although primarily conceived and sponsored by the United States, it also included specialists from six European and Near Eastern countries.
