A Note on Some Growth Aspects of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) Grass Hedges and the Effect of Hedges on Leaf and Soil Moisture Content
A field experiment was conducted at Zalingei nursery of Jebel
Marra (Western Sudan) for two consecutive seasons (1999/2000 and
2000/2001) to investigate the effect of intra-row spacing treatments (10,
15, 20 and 30 cm) on some of the growth aspects of vetiver (Vetiveria
zizanioides (L.) Nash) plants which affect hedge formation. The results
showed that spacing treatments had a significant effect on plant height
and number of tillers. Spacing treatments of 10 and 15 cm had the highest
plant height followed by 20 and then 30 cm, while the 30- and 20- cm
spacings gave the largest number of tillers. Significant differences were,
also, found among spacing treatments in leaf and soil moisture content.
The 30 and 20 cm spacing had the highest leaf and soil moisture content.
The evidence obtained from the experiment suggests that under the soil
and climatic conditions of Zalingei vicinity vetiver grass hedges achieve
better growth when sown at the spacing of 30 cm within the rows and
three meters between rows. This may represent a lot of saving in planting
Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash) rarely seeds and can be
propagated by clumps of root stock or slips. It has various uses, including
control of soil erosion (Nix et al., 2005). Vetiver has been introduced in
the Sudan by Jebel Marra Rural Development Project (JMRDP) to combat
soil erosion which is a serious problem in that hilly region. The
appropriate plant spacing has to be determined since it involves financial
consequences. The present study was undertaken to investigate vetiver
hedge establishment using different spacing treatments under the semi
arid conditions of Western Sudan and its effect on soil moisture
