Author Guidelines

Manuscript preparation:

Authors should submit their manuscripts online in Microsoft Word Document or PDF. UofKEJ accepts submission of mainly four types of manuscripts. Each manuscript is classified as:


Regular article: Full-length original empirical investigations, consisting of introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion, conclusions. Original work must provide references and an explanation on research findings that contain new and significant findings. Size should not exceed 5000 words or 8-10 printed pages (including the abstract, references, tables and/or figures).


Short communications: Significant new information to readers of the Journal in a short but complete form. It is suitable for the publication of technical advance in engineering and technology and related fields. Size should not exceed 2000 words or 4 printed pages, is intended for rapid publication. They are not intended for publishing preliminary results or to be a reduced version of Regular Papers.

Review article: Critical evaluation of materials about current research that had already been published by organizing, integrating, and evaluating previously published materials. Re-analyses as meta-analysis and systemic reviews are encouraged. Review articles should aim to provide systemic overviews, evaluations and interpretations of research in a given field. Size should not exceed 4000 words or 7-8 printed pages.


Special issues: Usually papers from research presented at a conference, seminar, congress or a symposium. Size should not exceed 5000 words or 8-10 printed pages.


Manuscript Style: A manuscript must contain the following elements in the order as specified below.

-      Title (10-18)

-      Name and membership status of each author

-      Affiliation and correspondence address include e-mails and postal address

-      Abstract (about 300 words)

-      Keywords (8-10)

-      Body of the Manuscript

-      Acknowledgments, if any

-      References list

-      Appendix, if any

Manuscript Format

The manuscript should be formatted in one column format. Manuscripts should be typed on A4 paper size, portrait orientation with at least 2.5 cm margins double spacing all round. Authors are advised to use Times New Roman 10-point font.


Manuscripts in general should be organized in the following order:

  1. Running title. (Not to exceed 2 lines, Author(s) and Corresponding author information. This page should contain the full title of your paper with name(s) of all the authors, institutions and corresponding author's name, institution and full address (Street address, telephone number (including extension), hand phone number, fax number and e-mail address). Authors' addresses. Multiple authors with different addresses must indicate their respective addresses separately by superscript numbers:
  2. The Abstract (the abstract should not exceed 300 words for a Regular Paper and up to 100 words for a Technical Notes). Keywords must also be provided on this page (Not more than 6 keywords in alphabetical order).
  3. Text. Regular Papers should be prepared with the headings Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions in this order.
  4. Tables. All tables should be prepared in a form consistent with recent issues of peer-reviewed and refereed journals and should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Explanatory material should be given in the table legends and footnotes.
  5. Equations and Formulae. These must be set up clearly.  Numbers identifying equations should be in  brackets and placed on the right margin of the text.
  6. Figures and Photographs. For electronic figures, figures should be created using applications that are capable of preparing high resolution TIFF files acceptable for publication.
  7. Units: Use Standard International (SI) Units as primary unit. English units may be used as secondary units (in parentheses).
  8. References. Literature citations in the text should be made by name(s) of author(s) and number of the reference inside square brackets. For references with more than two authors, the name of the first author followed by 'et al.' should be used. Kheiralla and Tola [1] reported that….., The results have been interpreted by Kheiralla et al. [2].

The lists of references should include only publications that are refereed to in the papers, books, conferences proceedings and dissertations. The following guidelines should be followed:

-      References for papers: Authors, "Title of paper", Journal (italics), Vol, No #., date, pp.

-      References for books: Authors, "Title of Book (italics)", edition number, Vol, No #., date, pp.

-      References for conferences proceedings, seminars and symposiums: Authors, "Title of paper", “conference Title (italics)” name of sponsor, Vol, No #., conference place, date, pp.

-      References for Thesis and dissertations: Author’s name, “Title of Thesis degree (italics)”, University and department, city and country, year, pp.



Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
