Abstract

This article presents a translation of the summary and conclusions from Anthony John Arkell’s 1949 publication, Shaheinab. As one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Sudan, Esh Shaheinab yields archaeological evidence encompassing diverse cultural traditions, including Early Khartoum, Khartoum Neolithic, and Late Neolithic cultures. A. J. Arkell was the first archaeologist to excavate the site in 1949, seeking to bridge the remaining gaps in the Neolithic history of North and West Africa. His excavations revealed intricate cultural evidence and varied subsistence practices. Since then, numerous archaeologists have revisited the site, publishing further findings on its pottery, food production, and tool manufacturing industries. Additionally, this article incorporates scholarly annotations and commentary by the translator, grounded in subsequent research regarding the site and its cultural and environmental context..
