Abstract

This research, entitled "The Very Short Story between Tradition and Modernity: A Comparative Descriptive-Analytical Study", aims to explore the aesthetic continuity between classical Arabic
narrative heritage and the contemporary very short story. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical comparative approach, tracing the roots of the very short story in Arabic heritage through proverbs, maqāmāt, anecdotes, and the fables of Ibn al-Muqaffa‘, and comparing them with modern texts written by Zakaria Tamer, Hassan Bartal, Abdallah Al-Mutqi, and Jamila Znire. The results reveal that the very short story represents an artistic and intellectual extension of classical Arabic narration, sharing with it brevity, irony, and surprise, yet differing in purpose and aesthetic orientation. While the traditional narrative sought moral instruction, the modern form aims for aesthetic tension and interpretive openness. The study concludes that this genre reconfigures classical Arabic rhetoric into a contemporary artistic framework that emphasizes linguistic conciseness and symbolic depth. Ultimately, the research confirms that the very short story is not a rupture with tradition but a conscious renewal of it, contributing to the evolution of  Arabic narrative aesthetics and preserving the cultural bond between past and present.
