Abstract

The study aimed to examine the mechanisms of Arabization among the ancient Arabs, identify foreign loan-words in the Arabic language, and show the methods employed to Arabize them. The study followed the descriptive, inductive and analytical method. It has reached several findings, notably the following: Arab linguists Arabize foreign words - particularly trilateral and certain quadrilateral terms - by analogy to the inflectional and derivational structures of Arabic. They replace heavy consonants with lighter alternatives while maintaining their common phonetic features; in other cases, they employ metathesis by reordering certain letters. They also drop certain sounds from foreign words with six or more consonants to conform to Arabic phonology. The study recommends prioritizing extensive inductive research on foreign terms to identify the various methods of Arabization employed by the Arabs. It also calls for investigating the mechanisms of Arabizing modern foreign loan-words in Arabic, in accordance with the consensus of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo.
