Abstract

This study investigates the impact of AI-assisted translation on the future of professional translators by examining their perceptions of its benefits, challenges, and implications for professional practice. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 30 professional translators, translation instructors, and postgraduate students, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 10 professional translators. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, whereas qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings indicate that participants generally hold positive attitudes toward AI-assisted translation. They agreed that AI improves productivity, reduces translation time, enhances terminology consistency, and supports the translation of routine and technical texts. However, participants also identified limitations in translating literary, religious, idiomatic, and culturally sensitive texts. Both quantitative and qualitative findings confirmed that professional translators remain indispensable because of their ability to interpret context, preserve cultural nuances, and ensure linguistic and stylistic quality. The study also highlights the growing importance of post-editing and AI literacy as essential competencies for future translators. The study concludes that AI should be viewed as a complementary technology that enhances rather than replaces professional translators. It recommends integrating AIassisted translation into translator education, expanding post-editing training, and establishing ethical guidelines for the responsible use of AI in professional translation.
